Activated Carbon Air Filters Explained
Activated carbon air filters remove gases, odours, and VOCs through adsorption — capturing molecules in the carbon's vast internal pore structure. Unlike particle filters (rated by MERV), carbon targets gas-phase contaminants. For inorganic gases like hydrogen sulfide, potassium permanganate media is added for chemical oxidation.
How adsorption works
A single gram of activated carbon has hundreds of square metres of internal surface area. Gas molecules are physically trapped (adsorbed) in this microscopic pore network as air passes through. The more contact time and the more carbon mass, the more gas captured — which is why deep beds and proper residence time matter.

It depends on gas concentration and airflow. In typical applications, activated carbon lasts 6–12 months and permanganate media 12–18 months. Refillable trays make changeout fast and inexpensive.
